soundway releases new compilation of rare 1980s south african ‘bubblegum’ & boogie
in 1980s black south africa a local form of pop music evolved as the disco boom died down and slowly mutated. it was often ubiquitously described as bubblegum - usually stripped-down and lo-fi with a predominance of synths, keyboards and drum-machines and overlaid with the kind of deeply soulful trademark vocals and harmonies that south african music is famous for. compilers miles cleret (soundway) and dj okapi (afrosynth records) present a selection of 18 rare, handpicked 1980s cuts that highlight the period that nestles in between the ‘70s (where american-influenced jazz, funk and soul bumped shoulders with local mbaqanga) and the ‘90s when kwaito and eventually house-music ruled the dancefloors of urban south africa.

the second modugroove installment from the 100hz studio is a mixture of live improvised session recordings and arranged music taken also from live studio recordings. 2 tracks are collaboration projects with good friends of mine who happen to be great artists. we have 1 from richard rogers aka black booby and myself and 1 from julian giles and me aka junction chaos. this 4 track ep spans several styles of music from deep techno to graceful and emotive string dance. the focus of the ep and the label is the unusual, trying to not use usual drum patterns and 4 beat structures

weekend loving from jennifer lara is a perfect blend of boogie funk, roots reggae and lovers rock. produced by black solidarity records in 1985, this album is a masterpiece from the studio one princess. recorded at tuff gong and music mountain studios in jamaica, the rhythm tracks are played by some of the best musicians from the island in the sun: lincoln style scott (drum), errol flabba holt (bass), robbye lyn (piano & synthetiser), dean frazer & ronald nambo robinson (horns). this reissue was carefully remastered from black solidarity master tape, now presented as a double lp 45 rpm dj friendly edition. the original limonious artwork was reloaded and a bonus track was added to complete the set: ’in my time’, an obscure slow synth groove, full of hope and melancholy. jennifer lara was first taken to studio one in 1969 by keyboardist richard ace, who was a session musician. she never left the studio one family and became resident harmonist. she added backing vocals to the songs of some of the camp’s biggest names, including delroy wilson, freddie mcgregor, dennis brown and sugar minott. in 1974, jennifer lara recorded her debut album with coxsone dodd at studio one in brentford road. the results of the sessions appeared on studio one presents jennifer lara, which was an instant success. jennifer lara was one of clement coxsone dodds protégés. one year after coxsone passed, she died at the kingston public hospital. she is survived by two children, daughter ika and son cheka. jennifer lara was a very likeable person, got on with everyone. she was involved in many benefit concerts to help to poor and the needy in jamaica. may your soul rest in peace, we love you jennifer.

the procedure club is a collaborative -bedroom-pop- project founded by andrea and polish emigré adam malec in new haven, connecticut in 2008. the two began recording as a natural progression from their boredom with living in poverty in new haven, sharing musical tastes in shoegaze and pop bands of the 80s and 90s, such as black tambourine, and the jesus and mary chain, as well as a common admiration for baroque artists such as purcell and bach. out of this god-forsaken alliance comes procedure club, in which adam and andrea have combined melodic song structures with heavily reverbed vocals, stuttering mechanical drum beats, dirty bass, synths, and alternately washed-out and jangly guitars.

cute heels is the project of victor lenis, a contemporary electronic artist living in berlin, germany. he grew up in bogotá, columbia during the 1990s, surrounded by the radial punk scene. over the years, victor’s passion and fascination for synthesizers and drum machines to produce and compose resulted in his debut album “spiritual” for dark entries in 2014 as well as the “third skin” ep in 2016. inspired by equal parts liaisons dangereuses, drexciya and black devil disco club, cute heels connects the dots between detroit techno, early chicago house and belgium electronic body music. “state of mind” is a 4-track ep featuring the vocal talents of berlin artist aga wilk aka romance disaster on the the title track.

bxl002 is the second release of the artist-run brussels based label bxl. this second release by simon halsberghe features the dark discoïd black tape mass on the a-side. while the title refers to the tape delay echo s used in the production, it s the groove pushed forward by the pulsing bass line and the clap that give it that distinct dark disco vibe. on the b-side machine wailing sounds like an incessant siren. the rest of the elements in the track all push and pull around this hypnotic siren, giving it context and power. the last track, grey over white takes the hypnosis deeper with a deep fizzy bass line, resonant drone and crisp hihats. at the end of the track additional percussive elements puncture the drone to give way to a polyrhythmic work out.

white on white is an absorbingly dynamic, multi-layered album of improvisations made on the seminal ppg wave synth, inspired by the work, life and theories of the great, if forgotten, british constructivist artist marlow moss (1889-1958): a radical, gender-bending british jewish lesbian and innovator of non-figurative art who was a then-contemporary influence on piet mondrian, with whom she worked alongside from the late 1920s as part of the abstraction-creation artists association in paris, until the nazi’s forced her from mainland europe back to england, where she settled in the far west of cornwall.

after his appearance on born free records, rollerboys recordings, and rett i fletta, johannes wilkstrom aka yourhighness contributes to cocktail d amore music with stratofortress. the berlin based imprint gathered techno guru rrose, born free records owner samo dj, and international japanese wave representative gonno, to offer an ep with a wide range of interpretations of the title track. the original mix is an acid based, industrial influenced techno banger. highly energetic, for sweaty late-night dance floors. on the same side samo dj transforms the techno blaster into a funky ebm ballad, characterized by a deep male voice and a breakbeat groove. rrose is on remix duty on the b-side. stratofortress suddenly turns into a dubby, everlasting build up, that eventually implodes in the depth of a black hole. closing the ep gonno offers a slow-mo rework. deep and very cinematic, this remix will please every cosmic hole connaisseur.

recorded while gerald was in jamaica working on a project with lee perry in 1980. the master tapes of the four tracks that were recorded at the harry j sessions were only recently discovered. utopia was the only track that had been given a final mix back in the day. it was released on 7- on the black star liner later in the year and then reissued on partial records in 2014. the other tracks were never mixed until early 2017 when this task was undertaken by dougie wardrop. as well as mixing jerusalem (gerald did a later version of this tune for rej forte s jah works label in the early 1990s), working for the dollar and constant spring , it was decided that utopia should also enjoy a fresh mix.
